A professor of Computer Science, Harrison Longe, has advised parents not to force career choices on their children.
Longe, a lecturer at the University of
Lagos, stated this during the 14th valedictory/graduation ceremony of
the Bellina College, Akoka, Lagos.
According to Longe, it can be disastrous
for parents to force their children to a career path they are not
interested in pursuing in life.
He, therefore, encouraged the graduating pupils to choose their careers based on their interests and capabilities.
“It is important for each and every one
of you to carry out a realistic self assessment of what you want to be
and then convince your parents/guardian. Today, any career can transform
you to become a prosperous and happy person once you have a strong
passion for that career.
“For instance, in the early 1980s, no
student would opt for a course like Creative Arts. But today, we all
know how well developed our movie and music industries are,’’ he said.
The chairman of the occasion, Mr. Isaac
Ezechukwu, challenged the graduating pupils to endeavour to excel in
life, given the knowledge, skills and values the school had imparted in
them.
