US Airports To Quarantine Victims – White House

Nigerian News from Leadership Newspapers

The White House insists the U.S. government is fully prepared to deal with the current outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa — even if that means quarantining sick passengers at airports.
“We are in a position to ensure that public health is protected. If [U.S. Customs and Border Protection] officers do recognize an individual who appears to be exhibiting some of these symptoms, there are facilities at these ports of entry — at these airports — where these individuals can be quarantined and evaluated by medical personnel,” the White House’s press secretary, Josh Earnest, said during his daily media briefing.
However, Earnest also listed a number of reasons the American public should not be panicking about the Ebola virus potentially reaching U.S. shores. Notably, the virus is not especially contagious before sick individuals display the grisly symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding inside and outside the body.
“It’s important for the public to understand that the reason that it’s important to identify the symptoms is you’re not contagious unless you exhibit the symptoms of this disease. That’s what differentiates it from the common cold or the flu,” he said. “It’s also important for people to understand that this disease is not transmitted through the air, it’s not transmitted through the water, and it would not be transmitted through the food here in the United States. That’s why the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] has assessed that there is no significant risk to the United States from this current Ebola outbreak.”
Earnest also said there was a rigorous screening process before and after passengers from the affected African countries enter the U.S.
“It’s important to understand that there’s a screening process that individuals have to go through when they board aircraft departing countries where this outbreak has been reported. There’s additional screening that occurs when individuals starting in that region of the world arrive in this country,” he said.

Egypt orphanage video 'brutality' triggers outrage

Still of the video showing a Egyptian man beating young orphans
The manager of the orphanage who was filmed hitting the children has been arrested
A video showing the manager of an orphanage in Egypt beating children in his care has provoked outrage in Egyptian media.

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has intervened and the manager has now been arrested.

The video shows children aged between four and seven crying as the manager beats them with a wooden stick.

The manager's wife told Egyptian TV she shot the video a year ago as she "could not remain silent any more".

"He beats everyone, even me and our kids," she said.

In the video, the man is apparently punishing the children for turning on the television and opening the refrigerator without permission.

No mercy

The video appeared on social media on Sunday. Within a day, it was was viewed more than 20,000 times on YouTube and gained more than 85,000 shares on Facebook.

The orphans have now been transferred to another orphanage, an activist with the handle @GhadaEgyptologist tweeted: "The kids are so happy, as if they just got freed from a prison".

The governor of Giza province has also dissolved the orphanage's board of directors, according to state-owned Nile News TV.

Mainstream press and TV channels also criticised the owner of the orphanage and called for him to be punished.

"With video and pictures: The manager of an orphanage abandons his humanity and tortures kids for watching TV," said a headline on Al-Watan's news website.

Abuse of children in orphanages in Egypt is well-documented, although rarely reported in the media.

The children's right group FACE, which assists orphans and street children in Egypt, says the orphanages' work is hampered by a lack of funding and poor staff training.

Keshi hands NFF acceptance notice

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has sent in a formal notice to the Nigeria Football Federation accepting to continue as the country’s coach. The letter was submitted to the NFF Secretariat in Abuja on Monday.
A person with detail knowledge of the transaction as reported by AfricanFootball.com confirmed to The PUNCH that the letter was brought to the office by a relative of Keshi who also works as his aide simply identified as Ado.
The NFF three-man committee asked to open contract talks with Keshi formally sent him a letter of intent and it was this letter that Keshi replied to.
Keshi who had earlier in the year spoken about a possible move to South Africa has since said he was ready to continue with Nigeria. The former Togo and Mali coach, we learnt, earlier in the month demanded for prompt or advance payment of his salary and those of his assistants. He also wanted a free hand to be pick his backroom staff following the disagreement he had with the Federation during the last dispensation after one of his assistants Sylvanus Okpala was sacked by the NFF.
There were suggestions by top NFF technical committee members Paul Bassey and Garba Lawal on Monday that former Nigeria coaches like Shaibu Amodu and Christian Chukwu could handle the national team in a temporary capacity till negotiations are concluded with Keshi.
Last week a member of the NFF technical committee told The PUNCH that the Federation would not rush into signing on the coach as they needed to first have a review of the country’s performance at the Brazil 2014 World Cup and also be sure they can afford to pay Keshi a new rate.
Keshi has reportedly asked for a monthly pay of N10m instead of the N5m he earned during his first tenure.
“It is quite right to look at higher figures when looking at the new contract having earned N5m in the last dispensation. But the question to ask is if we can we afford to pay N7m or even pay more. How did we handle N5m? Was the Federation comfortable paying the N5m?
“Can we afford to pay more and how will the additional money be sourced? So it is not just to rush and increase and then create further problem by not being able to pay as at when due,” the NFF member said.
Nigeria will host Rwanda on September 7 in their first qualifying match for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. South Africa and Sudan are the other teams in this group.

We’re committed to digital migration —StarTimes

StarTimes says it is committed to ensuring Nigerians enjoy the best of digital television at an affordable price.
It stated this in a statement on Monday as it turned four. The theme of its anniversary this year is ‘Celebrating the hope of Nigeria’s TV’.
StarTimes said since it launched in 2010, its priority had been to help Nigeria to realise its digital migration goal.
The company’s Public Relations Manager of the NTA-Star Network, Mr. Irete Anetor, said StarTimes was strongly committed to ensuring that digital television was accessible and affordable to all Nigerians.
“Currently, we have more than 1.8 million subscribers meaning that these homes have access to affordable digital television; this, we are proud of and we hope to achieve more in the coming months,” Anetor said.
So far, StarTimes’ digital television coverage has reached 32 cities. The pay-TV service plans to cover 16 more cities and increase the digital television coverage of Nigeria to 80 per cent in the next couple of months.
The company’s PR manager said that StarTimes was spreading the reach of digital television access across Nigeria.
He said, “This is in line with our commitment to ensuring that Nigerians enjoy the best of digital television especially as we look forward to the 2015 deadline for digital migration.”
He said, “By the deadline we hope we would have realised 100 per cent digital television coverage of the country. Our vision is to help Nigeria migrate successfully from analogue to digital television, revolutionise the digital broadcasting industry and provide service that is affordable and available to all Nigerians.”
“Moreover, we were actively involved in Nigeria’s broadcasting milestone when Jos, the pilot city for digital migration, switched over to digital TV broadcasting; our system was used for the switch over.”
Anetor also said that the organisation would not relent in providing rich content and quality service to its customers.
He said, “Prior to StarTimes’ entry into the Nigerian market, the cost of pay-TV service was highly exorbitant but we entered the market with a different variation of pay-TV so that the average household can enjoy digital television.
“We introduced the new technology, digital terrestrial television technology to the country. Nigerians can confidently migrate into digital space with StarTimes as we provide them with the latest technology in DTT operations – DVB-T2 technology -, which will give over 80 channels of quality digital entertainment. StarTimes’ target is for every household in Africa to have access to pay-TV without compromises on the quality of technology as well as the content provided.”
From 45 channels in 2010, StarTimes now offers its subscribers more than 80 channels of news, music, sports, cartoon, documentary, Nollywood, Hollywood and Bollywood movies and much more.
The content of StarTimes, according to Anetor, makes provisions for rich local content in accordance to the National Broadcasting Commission’s regulations.
He reiterated that StarTimes would not relent in its efforts to ensure that its customers get quality content, saying, “We recently unveiled our new sports channel, Star Sport 2, to meet up with the demands of our clients for more sports content, particularly exclusive content.”
He added, “While the channel would be offering a wide range of sports including soccer, rugby, tennis, car race and extreme sports, StarTimes has the exclusive rights to air some soccer competitions such as the Guinness International Champions Cup, the European Qualifiers for UEFA EURO and the Ligue 1 matches. This would be aired on the channel.”

Nigeria to play Rwanda in AFCON qualifier

Super Eagles players

The Super Eagles will play the Amavubi of Rwanda in Group A of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, starting in September, the Confederation of African Football has said.
Rwanda defeated Congo 4-3 on penalties on Saturday to complete the pool for the final phase of qualifiers for the competition which hold in Morocco .
The other teams that made it to the final phase are Botswana , Lesotho , Malawi , Mozambique , Sierra Leone and Uganda .
The biggest casualties were Kenya and Tanzania , who will yet again have to wait for another two years to realise their dream of participating at the continent’s showpiece football event for the first time in as many years.
Sierra Leone had the easiest of paths, going through without kicking a ball following the withdrawal of Sierra Leone from the second leg. The Leone Stars won the first leg 2-0 in Freetown .
Kenya settled for a barren draw with Lesotho in Nairobi on Sunday, enough to see the latter through 1-0 on aggregate whilst Tanzania slipped to a 2-1 loss to Mozambique in Maputo . Elias Pelembe Dominguez scored the winner seven minutes from time. Tanzanian sensation Mbwana Samata canceled Josemar’s first half lead mid-way through the second half.
In Nouakchott , the Cranes of Uganda silenced hosts Mauritania , thanks to Robert Ssentongo’s late strike and seal their place 3-0 on aggregate.
Earlier on Saturday, Malawi and Rwanda edged Benin and Congo on penalties to go through whilst a 1-1 draw in Bissau against Guinea Bissau pushed Botswana into the final round.
The group phase will commence on September 5 to November 19, 2014 with the winners and runners-up of each group, plus the best third-placed team, qualifying for the final tournament scheduled from January 17 to February 8, 2015 in Morocco.

Nasri drops retirement hint

Samir Nasri

Samir Nasri has dropped a big hint that he will never play for France again. He says playing for his country makes him unhappy, reports Sky Sports.
The Manchester City midfielder was controversially left out of France’s World Cup squad by manager Didier Deschamps.
Nasri says he will make an announcement about his international future. That announcement will almost certainly mark the end of his international career.
“I’ve made the decision,” he said. “I made it a while ago but I will announce it when the time is right.
“It’s not something you can just announce on Twitter. I have to sit down and do a full interview and just say it. I will do it when the time is right. It’s not something you can just announce on Twitter. I have to sit down and do a full interview and just say it. I will do it when the time is right.”
Nasri started playing for France seven years ago. He has 41 caps and has scored five times for his country.
“Even before the summer, during Euro 2012 I had a lot going on,” he said. “Personally, it doesn’t affect me but it affects my family. They live in France, they read the press stuff.
“I live in England so I’m fine with everything they say (in France) and I’m used to it. But for my parents it’s really hard. I want to make them happy and the national team doesn’t make me happy.”
Although Nasri is only 27, he says his decision will prolong his City career.

Iraqi PM orders air force to help Kurds

Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki ordered his air force for the first time to back Kurdish forces against Islamic State fighters after the Sunni militants made another dramatic push through the north, state television reported on Monday.
Kurdish peshmerga fighters, who cut their teeth fighting Saddam Hussein’s troops, were regarded as one of the few forces capable of standing up to the Sunni insurgents, who faced almost no opposition from Maliki’s US-trained army during their lightning advance through the north in June, Reuters reports.
Then on Sunday the Islamic State inflicted a humiliating defeat on the Kurds with a rapid advance through three towns to reach the Mosul Dam, acquiring a fifth oil field to fund its operations along the way.
State television and witnesses said the Islamic State had seized Iraq’s biggest dam. Kurdish peshmerga officials said they had pushed militants from the dam area and were in control of it. This could not be immediately confirmed.
Despite predictions from Kurdish commanders that their forces would launch a successful counter-offensive, one senior Kurdish official urged the United States to step in and provide weapons “for the sake of fighting terrorism”.
Kurdish commanders whose units came under attack from Islamic State fighters told Reuters they faced overwhelming firepower, were taken by surprise and that militants had in many cases started shooting from villages where they had struck up alliances with residents.
The areas that the Kurds lost were not part of their semi-autonomous region, but had been seized in the north after the fall of Saddam Hussein.
Maliki has been at odds with the Kurds over budgets, oil and land, and tensions deepened after the Islamic State seized control of large swathes of land in the north and west of OPEC member Iraq.
In July, the Kurdish political bloc ended all participation in Iraq’s national government in protest over Maliki’s accusation that Kurds were allowing terrorists to stay in Arbil, the capital of their semi-autonomous region known as Kurdistan.
Opponents accuse Maliki of being an authoritarian ruler with a sectarian agenda whose alienation of Sunnis fuelled the insurgency. Currently ruling in a caretaker capacity after an inconclusive election in April, he has defied calls by Sunnis, Kurds and even some fellow Shi’ites to step aside to make room for a less polarising figure.
The Kurdish region is pressing the Obama administration for sophisticated weapons its says Kurdish fighters need to push back the Islamic State fighters threatening their region. The requested supplies include tanks, sniper equipment, armoured personnel carriers, artillery and ammunition.
The move is likely to further anger Maliki, who may see it as an attempt to circumvent the Baghdad government in a long-standing drive for independence.
For now, however, Maliki seems to have put aside his hostility with the Kurds to try to prevent further gains by the Islamic State, which has declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria it controls and threatened to march on Baghdad.
“The general commander of the armed forces has ordered the air force command to provide backup for the Kurdish peshmerga forces against the terrorist gangs of the Islamic State,” state television quoted Maliki’s military spokesman Qassim Atta as saying.
The senior Kurdish official said the Kurds had been overstretched because they had to watch over a vast territory.

At last, Oyinlola defects to APC

Former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola

The estranged National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party and a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has said that he will defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress in Osogbo today.
When contacted on the telephone by our correspondent, on Monday, Oyinlola, who confirmed that he would join the APC, said: “So it is. I am joining the APC.”
Sources within the APC told our correspondent that Oyinlola would join the APC today at the mega rally of the ruling party which is scheduled to hold in Osogbo.
The development has generated excitement in the camp of the APC because the former governor is considered to be very influential in the politics of the state just as his defection is seen as a boost to Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s chances of securing a second term in office in the election holding on Saturday.
It became obvious that Oyinlola’s crisis with the PDP was far from being over as he stayed away from the PDP mega rally which was attended by President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo, the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu; and the leaders of the party last Saturday.
If Oyinlola defects to the APC as scheduled, then all former governors in the state would be members of the ruling party.
Aregbesola had disclosed recently at a campaign in Iwo that Oyinlola had become a member of the APC.
Aregbesola said, “When the PDP was united as one party, we defeated them. Now the good ones among them have left and are now with us. All former elected governors in the state are now with Aregbesola.
“The first elected governor, Alhaji Isiaka Adeleke, is with us; the second governor, Baba (Bisi) Akande is with us. The third governor Omo’ba (Prince), is also with us. I can say this but they cannot say it.
“But a former deputy governor, who was chased away from office is the one they are banking on to win the election, they are joking.
“Their candidate has never won any election and he cannot win this one. The only election he won was a gift to him from the prince and he did not win but the election was manipulated for him.”
The National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Chief Bisi Akande and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had immediately after the defeat of Governor Kayode Fayemi by Mr. Ayo Fayose in Ekiti State, visited Oyinlola at his residence in Okuku to woo him to join the party.
Oyinlola is expected to be received by the national leaders of the APC at the mega rally.
The Chairman of the PDP in Osun State, Alhaji Gani Olaoluwa, when contacted, wished Oyinlola well in his new party.
Olaoluwa said, “There is neither a permanent friend nor a permanent enemy in politics. We wish Oyinlola well in his new party. But we are expecting him to congratulate us on August 10. We are expecting his congratulatory message after we might have been declared the winner of the election.
“The people of the state are against Aregbesola. So, no matter the number of former governors teaming up with him, he will fail. Aregbesola will soon become a former governor because Senator Iyiola Omisore is winning the election by the grace of God.
“The APC is now the party of former governors in Osun State. Aregbesola should be preparing to join the league of former governors.”

Lagos female doctor contracts Ebola virus

Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Monday said one of the doctors that treated the Liberian-born American, Patrick Sawyer, who died of   the Ebola disease, had contracted the virus.
Chukwu made this known in Abuja as Reuters news agency quoted the Geneva-based World Health Organisation as saying in a statement that Nigeria had four cases, of which three were classed as ‘probable’ Ebola and one as ‘suspected.’
The death toll from the Ebola outbreak, according to WHO,   rose   from 729 to 887 by August 1. The total number of cases in the four West African countries affected is now 1,603.
Sawyer, who arrived at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos on July 20, died at an Obalende hospital   five days after.
Chukwu said, ‘‘This is now the second case of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria. This victim is one of the doctors who attended to the patient who brought Ebola virus to Nigeria.’’
He also told journalists in Abuja that ‘‘about eight other persons who came into contact with Sawyer, and who had developed the Ebola symptoms, had been quarantined while 70 others were under surveillance.’’
The minister said, “All those who came into contact with the late Sawyer depending on the level of contact are still being traced and being invited every day and they are placed under surveillance just to ensure that the spread of disease is curtailed.”
He added that the Federal Government was currently reinforcing the technical working group on Ebola to include 35 state governments. Lagos State already has a TWG.
The minister allayed the fears being expressed by   the public about the corpses that were brought into Anambra and Imo states from some countries which already had records of the deadly disease.
He said, “Medical records have proved that the corpse taken to Imo State was not carrying Ebola while test is being carried out on the one taken to Anambra State.
‘‘We are collaborating with all the state governments to establish isolation wards for persons proven symptomatic to Ebola and a 24- hour emergency operation centre.”
The minister also on Monday inaugurated an Ebola Treatment and Research Group with a mandate to carry out an extensive research into the Ebola virus.
Chukwu said the group would receive and verify claims on Ebola cure; collate and analyse researches on the virus and advise the government as may be appropriate.
The group, according to the minister, has the Director – General of the Nigerian Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development and the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research as chairmen.
He added that the Nigerian researcher, who had found evidence of Bitter Kola inhibiting the growth of Ebola virus, Prof. Maurice Iwu ,and the Director-General of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control are also members of the group. Iwu was also a former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Chukwu said, “Although the research on bitter kola was not concluded, no progress can be made without research. For now, there is no scientifically proven vaccine or drug for the treatment of Ebola.”
He assured the public that the Federal Government was doing everything   to stop the outbreak of the disease but enjoined everybody to embrace good hygiene by constantly washing their hands.
Also on Monday, the President of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, Dr. Steven Oluwole,     said that only one authentic case of Ebola had been documented in Nigeria.
He   added that “the risk to all contacts of the case are theoretically unlikely to be uniform.”
Oluwole stressed the need for tracing, screening,   follow-up on all contacts   and effective   control at Nigerian borders as means of checking the spread of the virus.
He described the   virus as “a filovirus, which is transmitted to humans from contact with infected wild animals, or consumption of their raw or undercooked meat.”
The scientist listed the susceptible animals   as fruit bats, monkeys, chimpanzees and antelopes.
He noted that human to human transmission primarily occurs through contact with body fluids of infected persons, adding that skin and mucous membranes are the main routes of entry.

Infected doctor is not dead –FG

Just minutes after Chukwu and Oluwole spoke, there were rumours that the doctor who treated Sawyer had died.
The rumour was quickly dismissed by the Director, Centre for Disease Control, Abuja, Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi.
Nasidi   told journalists in Lagos that the doctor had been quarantined and was presently receiving treatment .
He said, ,”We will not be able to release the name of the new contact; but we know that the person is a doctor and a female. The patient is not dead. She is alive. Experts from the local and international organisations are attending to the patient.”

Lagos plans another isolation centre, may isolate 10 people

In Lagos, The PUNCH gathered that the state government had begun renovating another centre at the Mainland Infectious Diseases Hospital, Yaba , to isolate and accommodate some of the people that had direct contact with the late   Sawyer.
A reliable source, who is also on the team of experts monitoring the testing and surveillance of persons who came into contact with Sawyer,   said the building would give more room for them to contain possible infections.
He said, “ We are presently renovating another building at the hospital, so that we can isolate more contacts. This is now important with the recent development. We need to increase vigilance on surveillance on persons who came in contact with him.
“For now, we are looking at isolating at least 10 people that had first contact with him (Sawyer). This is in line with the stated guidelines for the monitoring of the virus by the World Health Organisation.”
The source added that the state government might earmark the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, as another hospital for isolated persons.
It was learnt that this   caused panic among health workers and patients at LASUTH.
A nurse who spoke on condition of anonymity with one of our correspondents, expressed fears that the plan might lead to an outbreak of the disease in the hospital.
She said, “We have been told that it is possible that they may bring in more people that came into contact with him (Sawyer) here. We are scared that LASUTH may not be the best place to bring anybody who may have contracted an highly infectious disease like Ebola. There is too much exposure for us, the health workers and other patients who come to the hospital.”
Earlier, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, appealed to striking doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association to call off their strike and join the government to fight the Ebola virus.
He said the   government would be offering incentives to any health worker who volunteered to work with the team of doctors   treating any infected person.
Idris said, “ We also welcome volunteers from the health profession and those who do so shall be given incentives. We also appeal to residents to support the government in fighting the scourge by being cautious.
‘‘As of today, one person out of the eight people who came into contact with the late victim of Ebola has tested positive. The state has established isolation and treatment centre for   the patient.
“The members of staff at this centre have also been trained on how to treat and handle   patients under their care. The hospital is also provided with enough facilities to ensure that the officials and other patients do not contact the virus.
“The patients under our surveillance were those who came into contact with the late Liberian-American. And the rapid response team has been in communication with these patients who developed fever and other symptoms.
“We will not stop in tracking all those who came into   contact with Mr. Sawyer. They remain in isolation until the confirmatory results are in and those who test positive for the virus will remain in isolation until they are no longer infectious.”

FCTA advises residents

In Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory Administration   called on the residents   to be vigilant   and to report any suspicious case to a health facility nearest to them.
The FCTA Secretary, Health and Human Services Secretariat, Dr. Demola Onakomaiya, made the call   at an emergency meeting   with the management staff of the secretariat on the preparedness of the FCTA to tackle the   disease.
Noting that Ebola virus could be devastating to families and communities, he said it could be controlled through the use of recommended protective measures.

Airlines operators   to introduce masks, gloves

Meanwhile, the   upsurge of the Ebola virus   has been giving airline operators sleepless nights.
Investigations   showed that officials of the airlines have been busy working on measures   to ensure the safety of their   passengers and crew members.
One of such strategies, The PUNCH learnt on Monday, is to have their cabin crew members wear gloves permanently in both local and international flights.
In addition, cabin crew members might   wear     masks to cover their mouths and noses, especially during international flights.
This, according to one of the airline officials, is to   reduce the risk of spreading or contracting the disease.
He said, “We are concerned because this Ebola issue is a serious one and all eyes are on the aviation industry. We the operators are on our toes also because it is risky for our officials who are on duty on a daily basis. The issue of gloves may soon be mandatory for everybody and we are still looking at other options.”

US to send 50 experts to W’Africa

The   United States has said it will in the next 30 days   send 50 health experts to West Africa to help contain the Ebola outbreak.
The director of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Tom Frieden, who made this known in a statement, described the Ebola outbreak as   “ the biggest and most complex   in history.”
He said, “It will take many months, and it won’t be easy, but Ebola can be stopped. We know what needs to be done. CDC is surging our response, sending 50 additional disease control experts to the region in the next 30 days.”

Trial drug sent to US Ebola victims in Liberia

A representative of the US National Institutes of Health is said to have contacted the Samaritan’s Purse in Liberia and offered an experimental treatment, known as ZMapp, for the two American patients who had contracted the virus.
Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, who work with the Samaritan’s Purse, an aid organisation, were believed to have contracted the virus from another health care worker   in a Liberian hospital.
ZMapp was developed by the biotech firm, Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc.
Brantly and Writebol were told that ZMapp which was developed by the biotech firm, Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc., had never been tried before in a human being but that it   had shown promise in small experiments with monkeys.
WHO said in its statement on Monday that Guinea has suffered the highest death toll with 358 fatalities out of 485 confirmed Ebola cases so far. Sierra Leone has had the largest number of cases, 646 overall, and 273 deaths, while Liberia has had 468 cases and 255 deaths.
Who said apart from Sawyer’s, the other probable Ebola cases in Nigeria were a health-care worker and a Nigerian who had been to Guinea.

Omisore’s bus donation divides OAU students

Senator Iyiola Omisore

Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have maintained different stand-points over the donation of a bus to the Students’ Union by the governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore.
While some of the students welcomed the receipt of the bus by the Students Union, others negated it. One of the students, who negated the receipt of the bus, Sola Adebola, accused the SU government of selling the rights of the students.
He explained that it was not right for the executives of the SU, led by Isaac Ibikunle, to receive the bus during the period of election.
Another student, identified simply as Bimpe, lamented that political aspirants wanted to use students to achieve their ambition.
He said, “I am surprised the Students Union would collect such in our absence. We are not on campus and I see no reason why the SU will proceed to collect the bus despite the hike in fee challenges and the shutdown of the institution. It is wrong. We don’t need a bus. What will the bus do in the problems we are facing?
“We are on strike and OAU is a federal school, being governed by the Peoples Democratic Party. Why can’t he resolve our strike challenge first? The last time he (the President) promised to solve the problem, we later realised it was a lie. This is propaganda from him. It will not make us vote him in.”
But the Students Union, in a communiqué signed by its President, Ibikunle Isaac and Secretary-General, Shittu Olatayo, said it collected the bus to aid students’ movements during protests.
The communiqué read in part, “Since the inception of our administration, it is a known fact that the political gladiators from major political parties have been engaging us, seeking our support just, as it is being done all over the state. But our position has always been that they should do projects for OAU students, such as donation of buses and scholarships, among others. In particular, both the All Progressive Congress and the PDP have promised us a bus each.
“Meanwhile, on Thursday July 31, 2014, the PDP gubernatorial aspirant, Omisore, donated a brand new 18 seater bus to the Students’ Union. This indubitably will aid the mobility of the Union, especially in times of struggle, and make the Union enjoy mobility autonomy as against the constant seizure of the Union’s bus by the management whenever the Union has issues with the University.”

GE to invest $2bn in African energy, infrastructure

SEOUL: Australia’s Treasury Wine Estates is opening its books to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co LP after the private equity giant hiked its takeover offer to $3.15bn, raising the prospect of a bidding war for the world’s No.2 winemaker, Reuters reported on Monday.
Treasury, which rejected a $2.9bn unsolicited bid from KKR in April, said the 10.6 per cent rise in the offer price meant it was now “in the interests of shareholders to engage further.”
Asia’s growing appetite for wine, the value of Treasury’s Penfolds label and an ongoing restructuring are helping turn perceptions of the company’s prospects around after a horror 2013 saw profits slump 38 per cent in the six months to February.
China’s Bright Food Group Co Ltd [SHMNGA.UL], France’s Pernod Ricard (PERP.PA) and the world’s biggest wine maker, US-based Constellation Brands Inc (STZ.N), have all been mooted as potential buyers of Treasury.
“Absolutely there are (rival bidders), they’ve now kind of set a starting point for the price,” said Shannon Rivkin, director at Rivkin Securities.
“This is going to be the point now where anyone who has any interest will be able to have a look at the books as well.”
Treasury, which also owns the Wolfblass and Beringer brands, stressed it was providing KKR and new bidding partner Rhone Capital LLC with “non-exclusive” access to its books for due diligence and that there was no certainty any offer would be forthcoming.
Treasury rejected KKR’s A$4.70 per share bid as too low in May after KKR began approaching investors directly.
The new A$5.20 offer is a five percent premium to Treasury’s A$4.95 share price close on Friday. Treasury shares were up around four percent at A$5.15 on Monday.
Treasury’s shares have fallen from an all-time high of A$6.43 a year ago amid slashed earnings forecasts, oversupply problems in its US arm and sluggish sales in China.
If a firm offer did result, Treasury said it would assess whether it provided superior value to plans the company already had to cut costs and improve its performance, which included separating its Australian luxury and mass prestige portfolio from its lower value commercial brand portfolio.
Rivkin cautioned that a closer look at the books could also raise concerns — and possibly a lower price — pointing to the recent takeover of struggling food maker Goodman Fielder Ltd (GFF.AX) by Malaysian billionaire Robert Kuok’s Wilmar International Ltd (WLIL.SI).
Wilmar and Hong Kong investment firm First Pacific convinced Goodman to accept a lower offer after a look at the books resulted in the Australasian firm warning of a massive impairment charge due to pressures on its baking unit.
“I think this is a starting bid, once they have a look through, if there are any issues there that the market’s not aware of they could still very easily walk away,” Rivkin said of the KKR offer for Treasury.
Treasury’s problems are reflected in the broader Australian wine industry, which has struggled through volatile market conditions and a high currency in recent years.
Treasury — which posted sales worth A$1.7bn in the 2013 financial year — has tried to stave off takeovers by cutting costs and installing new Chief Executive Officer, Michael Clarke in April.
Former CEO, David Dearie, was sacked in September last year after presiding over a A$160m charge due to the destruction of thousands of gallons of cheap wine exported to the United States.
An efficiency drive imposed by Clarke is expected to generate A$35 million in savings in the 2015 financial year by shedding jobs and rationalizing office space, I.T. and non-essential spending.
The company, which is scheduled to release full-year results on Aug. 21, is also counting on its Penfolds release to boost sales in the second half of the 2013-14 financial year.

Libya inaugurates newly elected parliament

Three-quarters of Libya’s newly elected parliament held its first official session in the eastern city of Tobruk on Monday, even as militias continue to battle each other in the oil-rich North African nation’s largest cities, Associated Press reports.
The 200-member parliament was elected at the end of June and will take over from the previous assembly which was dominated by Islamist groups including the Muslim Brotherhood. The new body’s real power remains in question however as the militias who overthrew longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011 are fighting each other for control of the country.
In the last few weeks, 230 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 injured as combat has destroyed the capital’s airport and thousands of Libyans and foreigners have crammed the bordering crossing with Tunisia in an effort to escape.
“Libya is not a failed state,” maintained newly elected parliamentarian Abu-Bakr Baeira as he addressed his fellow deputies and called for help from the international community. “If the situation were to get out of control in Libya, the whole world will suffer.” Baeira is among the top advocates for a federated system where Libya’s three historical regions enjoy a degree of self-rule.
The session took place in Tobruk because Islamic militias now dominate the country’s main city in the east, Benghazi, driving out troops loyal to renegade general Khalifa Hifter after a monthslong battle.
The mere fact that the parliament was unable to convene in Benghazi, “shows the challenges facing Libya by ongoing fighting between armed groups and extremist ones,” said Hesham Youssef, speaking to the deputies as a representative of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
The session was boycotted largely by pro-Islamist deputies including the head of the outgoing parliament, Nouri Abu Sahmein, who has called for holding a rival opening session in Tripoli. There are also 12 seats vacant because they represent regions too unstable for elections.
“We are in a crucial period where the rattle of guns are louder than reason,” Ezz Eddin al-Awami, a member of the outgoing parliament, told the new deputies in Tobruk.
Since the overthrow of Gadhafi, Libya has been ruled by politicians backed by militias, especially powerful ones from the cities of Zintan and Misrata.
The uneasy balance of power crumbled when Hifter announced a campaign in May to rid the country of Islamist militias and parties.

Bangladesh ferry capsizes with 500 on board

A ferry in Bangladesh with hundreds of passengers on board has capsized, Sky News reports.
The accident happened in the River Padma, near Munshiganj district, about 18 miles (30 kilometres) southwest of the capital Dhaka.
Reports said around 100 passengers had been been saved from the vessel, identified as the Pinak-6. Two bodies have been found so far.
One official said that the boat was carrying passengers who were on their way home after celebrating the end of Ramadan.
The English language website of Dhaka daily newspaper Prothom Alo said the boat was in the middle of the river between the terminals of Mawa and Kawrakandi when it overturned at about 11am (6am UK time).
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Mawa zone manager Abdul Alim told the newspaper the passengers who were rescued had been travelling on the roof of the ferry.
Alim put the number on the ferry at as many as 500.
Tugboats were involved in the rescue of the rest of the passengers, he added.
Survivor Syed Saadi said his wife and two sons were still missing.
He said: “The waves were huge, the ferry was rolling heavily from side to side.
“The boat flooded with water after a huge wave hit it, and tipped over before sinking under the water.”
Lauhajang police officer-in-charge Md Tajul Islam said the exact number of the passengers rescued and missing was not yet known.
Local police chief Tofazzal Hossain told the AP news agency some of the passengers would have been able to swim to safety but many were feared trapped or drowned.
The ferry provides one of the main crossing points of the huge river which becomes the Padma after the Ganges leaves India and later joins the Jamuna River.
The crossing, which takes passengers across the 2.5 miles-wide (4km) river, provides many of those from the south west of the country with access to Dhaka.
In March 2012, a ferry sank near the same spot, killing around 145 people.

McDonald’s to resume full menu in Beijing, Guangzhou

HONG KONG: McDonald’s Corp (MCD.N), which has over 2,000 restaurants in China, will restore its full menu in some Chinese cities this week, a fortnight after a food safety scandal forced the company to halt the sale of staples such as Big Macs and Spicy McWings, Reuters reported on Monday.
The world’s biggest restaurant chain will resume full menus in Beijing and Guangzhou this week, while menus in Shanghai will return to normal this month, a company spokeswoman in China told Reuters on Monday.
She said some other cities had also resumed full menus, but declined to give more details.
McDonald’s last month cut ties with Shanghai Husi Food, a unit of US-based OSI Group LLC, after a television report triggered investigations into improper meat-handling procedures at Shanghai Husi’s factory. McDonald’s decision led to meat shortages at many of its restaurants in China.
The scandal highlights the challenges facing inspectors in China’s fast-growing and sprawling food industry. China is Yum Brands Inc’s (YUM.N) biggest market and McDonald’s third-largest by outlets.
The resumption process is taking longer than expected, the McDonald’s spokeswoman said.
“We will go back to the origin of the food, where the food comes from, so it will take a longer time and is not as easy as people may think.
“We are doing a very stringent inspection to make sure the food meets the government’s requirement and McDonald’s standards,” she said.
In Hong Kong, McDonald’s said it was now directly importing lettuce and fresh onions from the United States and Taiwan, and items on its menu such as Big Mac, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, McChicken and Grilled Chicken Burger were restored on its menu on Monday.
Shanghai Husi was accused earlier this month by a television documentary of mixing expired meat with fresh produce and forging production dates. Shanghai regulators said the company had forged the dates on smoked beef patties and then sold them after they expired.
Chinese police have taken six executives of Shanghai Husi into custody, state media reported on Sunday.
The food safety scare is testing local consumers’ loyalty to foreign fast-food chains. Yum, owner of the KFC and Pizza Hut chains, said last month that the scandal had caused “significant negative” damage to sales at its restaurants.

China earthquake: Troops join race to help survivors

China has deployed 2,500 soldiers to the south-western province of Yunnan to help search for survivors after an earthquake killed at least 398 people, BBC reports.
More than 1,800 people were injured when the magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck on Sunday.
Attempts to reach the epicentre have been hampered by heavy rain, with some rescuers forced to travel on foot.
State broadcaster CCTV said the earthquake was the strongest to hit the mountainous province in 14 years.
President Xi Jinping called for “all-out efforts” to find survivors as he dispatched soldiers to the area.
They joined more than 300 police and firefighters from Zhaotong and about 400 emergency workers and sniffer dogs from across Yunnan province in the rescue operation.
But rescuers trying to deliver the much-needed supplies are struggling to reach the area, reports the BBC’s Celia Hatton in Beijing.
Unrelenting rain and continuing landslides have left many roads in the region too damaged to use, she adds.
Premier Li Keqiang has travelled to the area to oversee the rescue operation. According to AFP, quoting Xinhua news agency, he had to walk for “over three miles” to reach the worst-hit village in Yunnan on Monday.
Xinhua said its reporters in Ludian county – where the epicentre of the earthquake is located – “saw drenched survivors sit along the muddy roads waiting for food and medication. Some half-naked survivors were quivering in the rain”.
Equipment brought to the area included life-detection instruments and digging equipment to help with rescue efforts.
At least 12,000 houses were reportedly destroyed in the earthquake, with another 30,000 damaged.
The government had sent 2,000 tents, 3,000 folding beds, 3,000 quilts and 3,000 coats to the disaster zone, Xinhua said.
Chen Wangchang, head of Ludian County hospital in Yunnan’s Zhaotong City, said temporary tented medical facilities had been set up.
“All the houses had already collapsed when we arrived. Dead bodies were everywhere and there were a lot of injured people.”

Gaza: No place to bury the dead

Umm Mohammed Abu Sada uses her headscarf to block the stench of bodies, some of which have been lying outside for days. Excluded from Israel’s humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, this city in southern Gaza has suffered under continued Israeli shelling and air strikes, Al Jazeera reports.
“The smell of bodies knocks people down – it is horrible to see human bodies thrown on to the streets like that,” Abu Sada told Al Jazeera. “The missiles are hitting everyone…there is nowhere for us to seek shelter.”
Corpses of dead Palestinians have overwhelmed morgues at Rafah’s hospitals, and relatives have been left with no option but to keep their loved-ones in commercial refrigerators. At the city’s Kuwaiti hospital, a stream of ambulances negotiated its way through crowds of medical staff and families, delivering bodies to be laid out on the gravel outside the building.
Many of the dead have no one to bury them except distant relatives, as Israeli air strikes on Rafah have killed several members of the same families.
On Saturday, four members of Mohammed Ayyad Abu Taha’s family were killed when Israel struck their home, including two children and one woman, while an Israeli air strike on the Al Ghoul family’s home in Rafah killed eight family members on Sunday, including two women, and three children – aged one month, three years and 13-years-old – according to UN figures.

SURE-P: FG threatens fraudulent interns, firms

SURE-P illustration

The Federal Government on Monday threatened to prosecute any intern or firm that engages in fraudulent activities capable of scuttling the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme.
The Assistant Director, Monitoring and Evaluation, SURE-P, Mr. Aremu Najeem, said this in Calabar, Cross River State, during the commencement of a three-day orientation training for graduate interns and firms’ representatives.
He said the government was committed to the ongoing Graduate Internship Scheme as part of the subsidy.
“While this, Government remains committed to the objectives of the GIS for the benefit of Nigerians; we would not hesitate to prosecute fraudulent interns and firms who would like to abuse the government’s good intentions.
“Therefore, I wish to re-affirm the government’s commitment to this unique scheme and urge that both firms/organisations and interns justify this gesture for the betterment of the country, ‘’ Najeem said.
The training, which is aimed at enabling the interns optimise their internship period by developing useful skills and positive work habits, was organised by the Federal Ministry of Finance as part of SURE-P of the Federal Government.
Najeem said that the three-day orientation training was designed to provide the interns with the skills they need to function properly in the workplace.
“And prepare them to better appreciate some life requirements essential to fulfilling destiny,” he said.
According to him, part of the objectives of the orientation training include providing interns the opportunity to developing useful skills and positive work habits as well as to expose participants on life after internship.
“Also, it is to provide them with opportunity to share experiences with other participants, including partner representatives on opportunities and challenges in the workplace. It is to contribute to service delivery and performance of partners,” he said.
The assistant director said that the thrust of GIS was to bridge the gap between school and labour market and to provide the graduates with something to do and a means of livelihood.
He said that some beneficiaries of the scheme have successfully utilised the window of opportunity provided by the scheme to becoming entrepreneurs in various skills.
He said that the duration of the scheme is one year after which another batch of beneficiaries would take over, adding that 50 participants were participating in the training.
“These include 38 interns drawn from graduate-residents in Cross River and who are between the ages of 18 and 40 years and 12 firms representatives,” he said.
According to him, the beneficiaries would be given the sum of N30,000 each to start business.
A representative of one of the firms, Mr. Ettah Mathew, who is a Regional Sales Manager, Wehtam Matts B (Nig.), described the initiative as very good. He commended the Federal Government for the scheme.
He said his firm would ensure that they keep to the rules guiding the scheme. He also ensured that the graduates attached to them were well treated.

New Nigeria videos ‘show military abuses’

Graphic new video footage from northeastern Nigeria shows the country’s military carrying out abuses against civilians as part of their fight against the armed group Boko Haram, human rights group Amnesty International has said.
One video, obtained by Amnesty and released on Tuesday, shows what appear to be military personnel and civilian vigilantes calling five detainees out from a row of 16 young men and boys, then slitting their throats one by one before dumping their bodies into an open grave.
The violence against civilians constitutes “war crimes,” Amnesty alleged.
Amnesty said it obtained the footage from “numerous sources” in Borno state, Boko Haram’s birthplace and stronghold.
The rights group said it independently confirmed from several military sources that the armed captors in the footage “were indeed military personnel.”
Amnesty also accused the military of killing prisoners.
Some of the footage was apparently taken on March 14, the same day that Boko Haram broke into a military detention centre in Giwa barracks, freeing hundreds of prisoners. Amnesty says the military recaptured more than 600 of these prisoners and killed them.
The Nigerian military is studying the video footage “with a view to identifying those behind such acts,” Defence Headquarters spokesman, Chris Olukolade, said in an email.
He added there will be “legal action against any personnel or anyone found culpable.”
Nigerian authorities have rejected past accusations, insisting the military follows international best practice in its fight against the group.
More than 4,000 people – mostly civilians – have been killed this year alone “by all sides” of the conflict, said Amnesty.

World Bank pledges $200m to contain Ebola

The World Bank has pledged $200m to help contain the deadly Ebola virus, with the growing crisis forcing healthcare system in Liberia to shut down out of fear of staff contracting the virus.
The World Bank said on Monday that it would provide up to $200m in emergency assistance to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone to help the West African nations contain the deadly outbreak which has killed 887 since the outbreak began in March this year.
Jim Yong Kim, World Bank president, himself an expert on infectious diseases, said he has been monitoring the spread of the virus and was “deeply saddened” at how it was contributing to the breakdown of “already weak health systems in the three countries”.
The funding will help provide medical supplies, pay healthcare staff and take care of other priorities to contain the epidemic and try to prevent future outbreaks, the World Bank said.
The announcement came as health centres in Liberia’s capital city of Monrovia shut down because medical personnel became too afraid to turn up to work, the Associated Press news agency reported.
Both Liberia’s and Sierra Leone’s top Ebola doctors lost their lives to the disease after caring for numerous people.
Healthcare personnel in Liberia say they have not received sufficient support from the government to be able to deal with possible Ebola patients walking through their doors.
“The health workers think that they are not protected, they don’t have the requisite material to use as to protect themselves against the Ebola disease, so many of the health workers including physician’s assistants, nurses, are staying home,” said Amos Richards, a physician’s assistant from Monrovia.

I want to play for Nigeria –Sammy Ameobi

Sammy Ameobi

Newcastle United forward Sammy Ameobi says he will like to commit his international future to Nigeria after his elder sibling, Shola, represented the country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The international future of the player, who was born in Newcastle to Nigerian parents, had been in doubt, after ditching Nigeria for England at youth level.
Ameobi played two friendly games – against Saudi Arabia and Egypt – for the Flying Eagles in 2011, preparatory to that year’s African Youth Championship.
But he later accepted a call up to the England U-21 side, and also played two games against Iceland and Belgium.
But now, the player will be happy to wear Nigeria’s green and white colours at senior level. He was in Brazil to cheer Shola, as Nigeria reached the last 16 of the World Cup.
“It will be a great honour to play for Nigeria. I would love it. I have seen how it has been with my brother and the World Cup was a great experience, which I would love to experience and help make sure Nigeria participates in again,” Ameobi told supersport.com.
The 22-year-old said Shola has been a huge influence on his career.
“He has always been there for me. Whenever I needed advice, he would volunteer it; and also when I tried to make moves that might have derailed my career, he was quick to pull me back on track. It is great to have a proper professional as an older brother.”
The forward was loaned out to Middlesbrough in 2013 but he is hopeful of a great season ahead.
“I am no longer a kid, I am in the last year of my contract with Newcastle and I have to start it with a bang. I have had a lot of injuries which I am hoping I have gotten over now, so I need to play very well to either get a new contract with Newcastle or be able to make a good move elsewhere,” he added.

Osun: 500,000 unclaimed voter cards cloned, APC alleges

National Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Lai Mohammed

Ahead of the Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State, the All Progressives Congress has raised the alarm over alleged cloning of about 500,000 unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards in the state.
The party did not attribute the act to any person or group but stated that that the cards were cloned for the purpose of rigging and had been handed over to persons outside state to enable them participate in the Saturday’s election.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement he issued in Osogbo on Monday, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to be vigilant to ensure that only those who it issued the PVCs to were the ones allowed to vote on the election day.
He said, “The All Progressives Congress has issued a red alert on the August 9 governorship election in the Osun State, saying about half a million Permanent Voters Cards, which were either unclaimed, not handed over to their authentic owners or were obtained fraudulently, have been cloned by unscrupulous persons ahead of the election, with the sole purpose of rigging.
“These cloned cards, mostly in the hands of persons from states other than Osun, are to be used along with the authentic PVCs issued to the electorate in Osun state during the August 9 Osun governorship election.”
The party said for INEC to prove it was not part of the scam, it must within 72 hours to the election make available to all political parties the voters register it used for issuing the authentic PVCs.
“We also demand that copies of these registers, which are already in possession of the local government electoral officers, be made available to all political parties at least 72 hours before the election. Anything short of using the registers that contained the names of the authentic voters will not be acceptable,’’ the party said.
According to Mohammed, the cloned cards are already in the possession of thousands of people especially in the neighbouring states around Osun State.
He said those in the possession of the fraudulent cards were being induced with money and instructed to superimpose their photographs on the cloned PVCs.
The statement said, “Already, we can confirm that the hundreds of thousands of people in possession of these cloned cards all over Nigeria, especially in the states neighboring Osun, are being induced monetarily and instructed to super impose their photographs on the cloned PVCs.
“The game plan is for them to arrive early at the the polling booths on election day, where conniving electoral officials will turn a blind eye to this fraud by not checking whether or not the names of these impersonators with cloned cards are on the voters register before going ahead to accredit them, to pave the way for them to use the cloned cards to vote at the expense of the genuine holders of the cards.”
