‘Why govt can’t reverse suspension of doctors’ appointments’

Secretary to the Government the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim

The Federal Government on Wednesday said the embargo placed on appointment of new doctors into public hospitals across the country and the suspension of the Residency Training Programme in the health sector was done in the overall interest of all Nigerians.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, stated this in his office during a meeting with the members of the Presidential Committee of experts on inter-professional relationship in the public health sector and top policy makers of the Federal Government.
The committee, which was led by a former SGF, Dr. Yayale Ahmed, was constituted by the Federal Government to fashion out ways of fostering harmony in the sector to avoid perennial crisis.
Anyim explained that the Federal Government suspended fresh negotiations with the striking doctors and other unions in the sector pending the outcome of the committee.
He said, “Even as we try to discuss with members of the Nigerian Medical Association, and other unions in the sector, we would have difficulty to have much to do except to wait for the report of this committee.
“Presently, Mr. President had directed that there should be no fresh intake of doctors into any public hospitals. He had as well, directed that Residency Training Programme should be suspended.
“The idea is that, until we find a lasting solution to this sector, everything should be on hold. The expectations are squarely on your committee to provide the solution.
“We have insisted that we could not re open negotiations with them when this committee is yet at work. I do recalled that one of the concerns they shared was that they did not know when the committee’s work would end.
“For them, they thought it was a ploy on the part of the government simply to drag its feet, on their demands. With your visit today, it is clear , it is evident, it is in fact right on the table, that your committee is at work, it is marching step by step with due diligence to arriving at a lasting solution to all the challenges in the sector.”
The SGF said the challenges that the government had been facing from the health sector was so monumental that “President Jonathan thought it wise to seek your (Ahmed) leadership of a committee that we believe we can entrust to resolve the challenges.”

Minister threatens to revoke N3.4bn contracts

Steve Oru

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Dr. Steve Oru, has threatened to revoke the contracts for two of the nine skill acquisition centres in the Niger Delta over poor and delayed contract execution.
The two contracts are the Skill Acquisition Centre in Otuke, in the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State and the one for Ibeno in Akwa Ibom State awarded for N3.4bn.
The companies involved in the execution of the contract for the two centres are Stegis International Agencies Nigeria Limited, Salem Cat Limited, Enorasol International Limited, Ogbosite International Limited, El-Hanen Ventures Limited, Verity Concept Limited and Y.S. Associates Limited
The Otuoke Centre is expected to be a centre for the training of youths in oil and gas, maritime studies, Information and Communication Technology and how to assemble ipad and mobile telephones on completion.
The minister summoned the contracting firms to his office and lambasted them for shoddy execution of the contracts, which he said lacked the appropriate supervision.
He told the two contractors that the level and the quality of job done on the centres was too poor to be acceptable to the Federal Government.
He therefore issued a two-month ultimatum to the contractor handling the Otuoke Centre and a six-month period of grace to the firm handling the Ibeno Centre to complete the projects or face the wrath of the government.
He said, “The impression we had before the visit were of Otuoke being ready for commissioning by the President at any given date and that this would be followed by the commissioning of Ibeno.
“But contrary to what we had on paper in the office here when I was being briefed, we were in a state of shock by what we saw first at Otuoke, which we thought was already fully completed.

Chibok girls: Britain to send three Tornado planes

Abducted Chibok girls

BRITAIN’s Royal Air Force   plans to send three fighter jets to help in locating the more than 200   schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents on April 14 this year.
The RAF Tornado GR4s equipped with surveillance facilities, according to Daily Mail on Wednesday, will undertake “reconnaissance missions” over the Sambissa Forest where the girls are believed to be held.
A   British government source told The Times that the jets would help the Nigerian authorities in tracking the movements of the insurgents.
The report however added that the mission was dependent on a nearby nation giving the British government the nod to use its runway.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman did not deny the report about the deployment of the planes.
He said, “The United Kingdom continues to work with the United States and France as well as Nigeria’s neighbours and international partners to provide advice and assistance to the Nigerian government.
“Together with our allies we have provided continuous surveillance support to the Nigerian authorities, including satellite imagery. We are still in discussion with partners on the deployment of further surveillance capability.”
Last Friday,   Britain’s Minister for Africa, James Duddridge, had condemned the abduction of over 100 people in Nigeria and had pledged that the UK would continue to support in the fight against Boko Haram.
He said, “I am appalled to see reports of another large abduction by terrorists in the North- East of Nigeria. Officials at the British High Commission in Abuja are urgently looking into the details. The UK stands firmly with Nigeria as it faces the scourge of Boko Haram.”
The group on Monday killed at least three people and kidnapped 15 others in a fresh cross-border attack in northern Cameroon.
“The attack took place on Monday afternoon when at least 20 armed men tried to get food supplies, stealing all the [food] stocks found in the Cameroonian village of Greya,” the source told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.
The source added, “Boko Haram militants killed at least three civilians and abducted a dozen others – presumably all Cameroonians.’’

Liverpool in talks with AC Milan over Balotelli

Liverpool are working on a deal to sign Mario Balotelli from AC Milan and are in talks with the Italy striker’s agent in London, Goal has learned.
Mino Raiola, who represents a number of top-level footballers including Balotelli and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has flown to England to guage the Reds’ interest in his client.
The Merseysiders are also in talks with Milan, who – despite earlier denials from CEO Adriano Galliani – are willing to let Balotelli leave San Siro but will only consider a permanent switch and not a loan move.

Brendan Rodgers has insisted throughout the summer that he will not panic in his search to replace Luis Suarez, who joined Barcelona for just over €88 million.

A €10m move for Loic Remy fell through amid claims of a failed medical, while rumours linking the club with Monaco striker Radamel Falcao also persist.

Balotelli has been unhappy at Milan for several months but, while Galliani has been keen to keep hold of him, Rossoneri owner Silvio Berlusconi wants to complete a sale.

Berlusconi even claimed following the World Cup that the striker’s poor performances in Brazil had scuppered a big-money deal with an English club.

Police rescue kidnapped wife of DELSU lecturer

The police in Delta State on Tuesday rescued the wife of a lecturer at the Delta State University, Abraka from kidnappers.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, said the police had responded to a distress call by the lecturer, Mr. Emmanuel Okolie at 4am on Tuesday who said kidnappers had broken into his house at Obiaruku, stolen his laptop, his smartphone and N260,000 cash before taking his wife, Roseline, 52, to an unknown destination.

“Sequel to the report, operatives quickly mobilized and went after the hoodlums along Obiaruku/Utagba-Uno road where they ran into the hoodlums’ hideout.

“The kidnappers on sighting the operatives engaged them in a gun duel. Consequently, one of the suspects identified as Collins Onyemaro was arrested, while the remaining two escaped with bullet wounds and the victim was rescued unhurt.

“The suspect has given the names of his accomplices who fled with their weapon,” Kalu

Five new suspected Ebola cases in Lagos –LASG

Jide Idris, Lagos State Commissioner
for Health

As Nigerians continued   to mourn   Dr. Stella   Adadevoh on Wednesday, another sad news broke on Wednesday   that five fresh suspected   cases of Ebola Virus Disease had been reported in Lagos State.
The state Commsioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who announced this   shortly after the Federal Government gave an indication that it might immortalise Adadevoh, said another Liberian was among the new suspected cases.
Adadevoh, the first confirmed Nigerian to be diagnosed with the EVD , died on Tuesday evening.
She contracted the   disease while treating the index case, Mr, Patrick Sawyer, at the First Consultants Medical Centre, Lagos where she served as the Lead Consultant.
Before her death, Adadevoh was one of the three patients that were left at the Lagos isolation centre as of Monday.
Idris, who addressed journalists in Alausa, Ikeja, said before the five fresh cases were brought in, the Lagos isolation centre had two suspected Ebola patients.
He was however quick to explain that the Liberian, who was one of the five new cases, was allowed to go after getting a clean bill.
He said,     “The fresh suspected cases have increased the number of those in isolation wards from two to six.
“Till date, we have recorded eight suspected cases, five of which were brought in yesterday(Tuesday). We have 12 confirmed cases on the whole out of which five have died and five have been discharged.
“We are currently following up on 213 contacts. Sixty two have completed the 21-day follow-up.”
The commissioner described Adadevoh and other health workers at the FCMC   as heroes.
He said, “Yesterday (Tuesday), we recorded the death of the Senior Consultant/Endocrinologist of First Consultant,   Dr.   Adadevoh.
“She, it was, who took the initiative to intimate the ministry concerning the index case and subsequently to her credit, the moderate containment achieved.”
Idris said the state Ministry of Health was continuing with contact tracing which has now shifted from primary to secondary.
He added, “This is call for vigilance as human transmission is only achieved by physical contact with a person who is acutely and gravely ill from Ebola virus through body fluids such as blood, urine, stool, saliva, breast milk, semen and vomitus.
“Burial ceremonies where mourners, including family members, have direct contact with the corpse have also played a role in the spread. Direct contact with dead bodies should be minimised at this period.”
He insisted that the state was still not convinced that, a controversial trial drug, Nano Silver, could cure the virus.

FG may immortalise Adadevoh

In Abuja, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu,   said the Federal Government was   considering a way of immortalising Adadevoh for her bravery and sense of patriotism.
He   briefed State House correspondents on the highlights of the update on the virus which he presented at the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Jonathan.
Chukwu said but for the efforts of   Adadevoh,   Sawyer would have escaped from the   FCMC   and caused a disaster for the country.
He said, “Indeed, she had to physically restrain this infected person from escaping from the hospital when the latter attempted to do so having been communicated that he was ebola positive.
“Indeed, if that index case had escaped from the hospital at that stage, it would have spelt disaster for Nigeria. As many more persons (many of whom) would have been very difficult to track, could have become primary contacts.
“There is no doubt that Dr. Adadevoh was not only a dedicated, committed and competent doctor, she showed rare courage,   sense of duty, service and patriotism to her country.”

Jonathan okays N200m for LASG

The minister also announced that Jonathan had approved the immediate release of N200m to the Lagos State Government as Federal Government’s direct support   in the efforts aimed at containing the spread of the EVD.
He also said he had written to a Canadian firm to see whether it could extend another trial drug, TKM Ebola, to Nigeria.
Chukwu   was joined at the press conference by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku; Minister of State, Power, Muhammed Wakil; Minister of State, Health, Khaliru Alhassan; and the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Emeka Eze.
The minister said any drug received would be made to pass through the nation’s Health Ethics Committee before it could be administered on any patient.
He said, “Presently, we have not stopped requesting for drug, I have requested from a company in Canada and a lot of Nigerians including the High Commissioner in Nigeria to Canada are making that request to see whether the other drug being manufactured in Canada called TKM Ebola would also be extended to Nigeria.
“It is an experimental drug. For whatever drug and if the patient gives us the consent, I want to stress this point that Nigeria as an organised country, the drug will have to pass through our Health Ethics Committee to approve.
“The minister can decide to deploy it but that is not the way to go, we have to do the correct thing and deal with that committee.
“Even ZMapp has now become Case One Clinical Trial; it has not been subjected to clinical trial. That they are using it to treat patients in US and Liberia is part of the clinical trial.
“Even at that, nothing is yet clear even though it is a fact that two medical doctors are getting better. In Nigeria, the five patients who were treated and got discharged were never given ZMapp. It tells you something. Let’s cooperate and work together, we will surely get there.”
He added that Nigeria currently had only two established cases of the virus made up of   a doctor and a nurse who came into contact with Sawyer.
The minister said all those under surveillance were secondary contacts who did not have symptoms of the virus yet.
Chukwu said that the incubation period for that category of people is 42 days from the day the index case was reported.
He said the rumoured cases   in Kaduna and Kwara states had tested negative.
The minister added,   “As of today(Wednesday), Nigeria has had a total number of 12 cases of Ebola which include the index case and 11 Nigerians who were primary contacts with the one index case.
“Of this 12, the the total number of successful cases who have been discharged stands at five but the total number of deaths including the index case stands at five.
“Currently, the total number of established Ebola cases in Nigeria are two, made up of one doctor and one nurse who had managed the index case and they are presently on treatment at the isolation centre .
“The latest death occurred Tuesday evening and that is the death of the most senior doctor, senior consultant/physician/endrocologist at First Consultants Hospital Lagos, Dr. Adadevoh.”
He explained that the five persons discharged after being certified to be Ebola-free no longer constituted danger to the public and hence should not be stigmatised.
Chukwu also said that the Federal Government had received a letter from the Osun State Government asking that it be allowed to host the annual Osun Osogbo Festival.
He said the government was still studying the request technically and would make a pronouncement on it soon.
He also said the Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Chief Edem Duke, had already ordered the indefinite postponement of the National Festival of Arts earlier scheduled for September in Ebonyi State.
He added that consultation was also ongoing between the Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Bar Association on the planned NBA general conference.
Chukwu said the United States will this week donate 30 body scanners to the Federal Government as its contribution to fighting the virus.
He   also said that the equipment which would be used to measure body temperature would be deployed in the nation’s borders.
Chukwu disclosed that a foundation belonging to Mr. Atedo Peterside had offered to assist all private hospitals where cases of the virus had been established to the tune of N100,000 per bed.
He said since the FCMC where the index case was reported had 40 beds, it would get N4m from the foundation.
He said the support become necessary because the affected hospitals, even after their decontamination, could not open for business immediately .
The minister said the Federal Government was also working out ways of assisting the affected hospitals.
He added that theTony Elumelu Foundation had pledged N50m to the cause while the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited had donated an ambulance.
He said the six months timeframe to conquer the virus as stated by the World Health Organisation was not applicable to Nigeria, expressing the hope that the country would soon eradicate Ebola.
Chukwu denied insinuations that the Federal Government sacked resident doctors, saying it was a matter of interpretation.
He said since the doctors had not been working for about two months, it would be wrong to say that they were sacked.
He likened their case to a situation in aviation that airlines describe as “no show.”
Chukwu however promised that the situation would soon be re-appraised so that residency programme could resume.
He said, “They (resident doctors) were not sacked; it is a matter of interpretation. For example, if someone while still working actively dies or whether that person resigned or was dismissed or retired or had his appointment terminated, they all mean different things in the public service.
“But the end point is that the person is no longer working. I want us to put things in proper perspective. Government did not sack anybody. It is true that they themselves have not been working for almost two months, except those in private hospitals.
“Resident doctors in both federal and state hospitals have not been working for almost two months now and they have not participated in the control of this EVD; they have not played any role.
“So even if government had not taken any decision, they are not there, they are not working and I don’t know why suddenly the media starts taking interest in them. They are not part of this success story.
“What happened is like in the aviation industry where when you buy a ticket and you fail to show up they say ‘no show’ and they even penalise you. So there is ‘no show’ of the resident doctors and even government is still paying them.
“People who are unemployed even some doctors will be asking government a question, is it because we did not have an appointment letter? What is the difference, you are paying people who are not working, we too are not working, why are you not paying us?
“Sometimes we need to think deeply about what we do to ourselves. Government says why can’t we use this period to appraise properly the residency programme and come up with something that can help the country?’’
Chukwu also said in a tweet on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the Minister of Health, Dan Nwomeh ,   that there was no new confirmed case of Ebola in the country.
In an email, Nwomeh referred one of our correspondents to twitter @DanNwomeh, where he explained that Chukwu said that there were needs for   “updates and clarifications of (mis)information on the fight against EVD in Nigeria.
The tweet read,“Meanwhile as of today(Wednesday), the status remains the same. Disregard all rumours of new cases please.
“This clarification follows reports of few new cases in Lagos State. This should be disregarded please.
“The Minister of Health reiterates that he has the sole authority to announce confirmed cases of disease epidemics in Nigeria. The minister reassures Nigerians that any new confirmed case of EVD in Nigeria will be announced by his office promptly.
“Any doubtful information on the outbreak of EVD should be verified from the office of the Minister of Health.
“Minister of Health restates that at present, today, now, Nigeria has only two confirmed cases of EVD.”
He also stated that there was no evidence that discharged patients could transmit the disease, adding that a Liberian whose name he did not mention was treated for malaria “having tested negative for EVD.”

UN Ebola coordinator to visit Nigeria, others

Meanwhile, a public health expert coordinating the United Nations   fight against Ebola, David Nabarro, has said he would be visiting West Africa to determine the strategies that the global body can deploy to support people, communities and governments affected by the   disease.
Nabarro, at news conference, said   he would have “intensive interactions”   with the World Bank, experts from the U S Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and others before flying to Dakar, Senegal.
He said he would from there travel to   Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria.

JTF foils oil theft, destroys two trucks in Abia

The Joint Task Forcein the Niger Delta, Operation Pulo Shield, on Wednesday said it foiled an oil theft incident in Ukwa-West Local Government Area of Abia.
This is contained in a statement issued by Lt.-Col. Mustapha Anka, Media Coordinator of the Task Force in Yenagoa.
Anka said two trucks siphoning Automated Gas Oil at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline which runs through Imo-Uzoakpo Community, in the area were seized during the raid.
He said the trucks with number plates XA 458 ABK and NSK 355 YF, were abandoned by the suspects on sighting the troops of
the task force.
The JTF spokesman also said that the operation followed information from members of the community alerting the task force that suspected oil thieves had been operating in the area since January 2014.
“The oil thieves operate during the night and leave the area and the environment polluted with petroleum products.
“The two trucks with illegal oil bunkering equipment were moved to a safer place and destroyed in line with JTF’s mandate.
“The destruction is also in line with zero-tolerance campaign on oil theft and illegal oil bunkering by the Commander of JTF, Maj.-Gen.
Emmanuel Atewe,” the statement stated.
He said the destruction was witnessed by representatives of Ukwa-West Local Government, the Manager Aba Depot of the Petroleum
Pipeline Marketing Company and Abia Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

Former Irish PM, Albert Reynolds, dies at 81

Former Irish Prime Minister Albert Reynolds, who played a key role in advancing talks towards brokering peace in Northern Ireland, died on Thursday. He was 81.
Reynolds served as prime minister from 1992 to 1994, a period in which he and then British premier John Major signed the Downing Street Declaration, a landmark agreement in the eventual ending of three decades of sectarian bloodshed.
Months after the 1993 deal – which affirmed the right of the people of Ireland to self-determination – the Irish Republican Army (IRA) called a ceasefire. A peace agreement followed in 1998, mostly ending the violence between Irish Catholic nationalists and mostly Protestant pro-British loyalists.
Reynolds died after a long illness, his Fianna Fail party said.
“What he brought to the process was a straight-forwardness. The ability to act when it matters is what stands out,” Gerry Adams, leader of the nationalist Sinn Fein party and a key figure in the peace talks, told national broadcaster RTE.
“The British government were very reluctant participants in the peace process at that time, so were many elements of the Irish establishment. It’s probably only possible when Albert Reynolds came in as a bit of an outsider, that he was able to turn some of that around.”
Reynolds, who served as finance minister during the 1980s, led two short coalition governments before resigning as party leader and prime minister in 1994 following a dispute with his junior partner in government.

MH370: Couple charged for stealing from missing passengers

Malaysian police have charged two people over the alleged theft of around $35,000 from the bank accounts of four passengers on missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.
HSBC bank officer Nur Shila Kanan, 33, is facing 12 charges after allegedly transferring money between the passengers’ accounts, Assistant Commissioner Izany Abdul Ghany of the Kuala Lumpur Commercial Crime Investigation Department told CNN.
Nur Shila’s husband, Basheer Ahmad Maula Sahul Hameed, a 33-year-old mechanic, is facing four counts of allegedly using a debit and other cards belonging to one of the passengers to withdraw money from an ATM.
Funds were also allegedly transferred to a fifth account belonging to Pakistani man Ali Faran Khan, who is still being sought by police.
Officers detained Nur Shila and her husband last Thursday after being alerted to the suspected fraud by HSBC bank officials in Malaysia.
Both defendants have pleaded not guilty. They’ve been released on bail and ordered to surrender their passports.
According to state news agency Bernama, their next hearing is on August 25.
It’s alleged that between May 14 and July 8, Nur Shila transferred $12,600 (40,000 ringgits) from the account of Malaysian passenger Hue Pui Heng to the account of Chinese passenger Tian Jun Wei, according to Bernama.
The bank officer is accused of then using fake documents to apply for a new debit card in Tian’s name, and making applications to transfer money from savings accounts belonging to Chinese passengers Ju Kun and Malaysian flight attendant Tan Size Hiang, Bernama said.

NSCDC discovers illegal cement factory in Abia village

The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, on Wednesday paraded seven suspects quizzed at an illegal cement factory at Asa Umunka village in Ugwunagbo local government council of the state.

Parading the suspects, NSCDC Commandant in charge of Abia, Mr. Andy Dateer, said his men on patrol spotted a compound that looked like a cement factory and decided to verify the type of business activity that was going on there.

He said that when his men eventually raided the compound, they were shocked by the discovery of over 40,000 bags of cements of various brands and about one million empty new cement sacs also of different brands pilled in a room.

NSCDC boss said his men suspected that the compound was being used as illegal cement factory wondering how one factory would be producing all brands of cement, hence , the arrest of the  suspects.

Different brands of cements found at the illegal factory include: the new Dangote 3x brand, Nigercem, Eagle cement, Freedom cement and  Ibeto cement along with empty bags.

NSDC boss noted that although the incidents of collapsed buildings were not rampart in the state, members of the public and unsuspecting cement users needed to guard against the activities of fraud-stars who had infiltrated the building sector.

He said the suspected fake cement products would be subjected to forensic test for analysis while the suspects would be handed over to the police for further investigations and prosecution.

Later in an interview, the prime suspect, Chief Samuel Nwokeneme, 62, said the business was established early this year  by his late son who died in an auto crash along Enugu- Port Harcourt expressway three weeks ago.

The suspect who was incoherent in his speech, denied that they were into any illegal cement production, saying that they had to continue with the late son’s business to keep the family going.

Asked why they should have in their custody a stockpile of empty new cement sacs  of various companies when they were not their registered agents, he said  “we are using them to work.”

Another suspect, Chibuzor, 27, initially claimed that he was only in a near-by ‘joint’ when he was arrested by men of the NSCDC , denying any  involvement in the illegal business, but later admitted that he knew that illegal business was going on there.

Asked if he had tried to alert security agents of the presence of such illegal factory in his vicinity, he mumbled “some times.”

Fayose inaugurates Transition Committee, laments Ekiti debt profile

Governor-elect of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday inaugurated a nine-man Transition Committee for the smooth take off of his administration on October 16.
Fayose, who performed the ceremony in Ado-Ekiti, said nobody in the party had been penciled down for any appointment, “except two people that I have promised and those were on conditional grounds.”
“I want to passionately appeal to members of the committee against turning the position into political appointments.
“You are to work with the government’s team when it is constituted to find out the situation of the treasury of the state,” he said.
He warned those with political ambitions in the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015 against name-dropping.
Fayose charged the committee members not to use the opportunity to fight the State Government.
“You just have to get the facts and let the people be aware of the situation on ground.
“Only those with grassroots connection will be used for future elections in PDP.
“I advise anyone with political ambition to desist from using his name to intimidate other interested members,” he said.
He described the debt profile of the state under Gov. Kayode Fayemi as worrisome and disturbing.
Fayose said that Fayemi’s government had plunged the state into huge debt.
“The debt is so much that we will have to sensitise the members of the public on the situation on ground because of high expectations in town.
“Available records show that Fayemi has taken N25 billion loan and only eight billion naira has been paid back; this is disturbing and worrisome.
“They are also diverting the money for salaries to pay contractors that have not been on ground in the last one year.
“This administration is doing all these so that they can incur huge debt just for me not to have a smooth sail.”
He said that he left N10.4 billion in the coffers when he left government.
Fayose said that today, “we are inheriting debt; I have to let the people know because of the expectations in
town on my administration.
“With the situation on ground, Ekiti is not promising at all because there is no magic to perform when there is no money.
“I want the APC to realise that they will still need these Ekiti people they were trying to punish again and it will be wrong to toy with their future.
“I want to plead with Fayemi to pay the salaries of workers.”
Reacting to the debt profile allegation, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Tayo Ekundayo, advised Fayose to stop attacking the government and wait until he takes over before start making policy statements.
He said N13 billion had been paid back out of the bond taken by Fayemi’s government.
Ekundayo said that government had not taken other loans apart from the N25 billion that was borrowed from the capital market.
He said, “does Fayose  has the account of the state? We have never hidden anything from the people, he is a governor-elect and he must not jump the gun.
“He cannot be commenting on issue  he has no record about and he must stop making comments until he takes over to be able to ask about the finances of the state.”
Members of the committee include: Mr. Dipo Anisulowo (Chairman), Mrs. Modupe Alade (Secretary), Pastor Kola Oluwawole, Mr. Owoseeni Ajayi and Rev. Wale Komolafe.
Others are: Mr. Biodun Alasoluyi, Mr. Benjamin Komolafe, Mr. Seye Alade and Mr. Dayo Ajayi.

Ebola: Plateau to kit all health workers

Plateau state government is to kit all health workers in its employment as a way of checking the spread of the dreadly Ebola virus.

State Commissioner for information and Communication, Mrs. Olivia Dazyam, said that the measure is also to ensure the safety of health workers and gain their confidence to do their job.

Dazyam told newsmen at the end of the State Executive Council meeting in Jos that the issue of the spread of the virus was extensively discussed and measures to contain the spread are being mapped out.

She said that a committee has been set up to monitor the situation and report all sicknesses that  manifests the Ebola symptoms with the assistance and cooperation of various health institutions.

The commissioner said that all facilities in government hospitals would be constantly fumigated to ensure that the environment is clean.

She said, “Coupled with the sensitization programmes going on, the government has gone a step further to kit all health workers in all government hospitals to prevent the spread of the virus, even though we have no case here, we don’t want to have it before we do anything.”

Dazyam advised the residents to adhere to all instructions pertaining to the Ebola scare and avoid being infected.

Our correspondent who went round some government hospitals in Jos observed that health workers were very careful in attending to patients.

A nurse, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said that though she was trained for the job, she has to be extra careful because the virus has no cure for now.

Ex-British council leader found dead after visiting Nigeria

A former British council leader, Andy Smith, who was found dead at his home, had just returned from Nigeria, sparking fears that he might have contracted the Ebola virus disease.

Smith, 64, was found dead just five days after he had returned from Nigeria, according to Echo news, a local British newspaper.

His death, according to the paper, led to a hazardous medical team being called in to assess his body before tests later confirmed he did not have the killer disease.

Smith, was a Labour councillor in West Thurrock and South Stifford and cabinet member on Thurrock Council having led the council as leader in the late 90s.

A spokesman for Public Health England said that Smith had been to Nigeria and West Africa, but not in infected areas and Ebola had been ruled out as the cause of his death.

Responding to the 999 call it received to attend his home in Nutberry Avenue, in Grays, last Tuesday, the East of England Ambulance Service sent a hazardous area response team who entered the property and confirmed that the former council leader was deceased.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said, “Public Health England were alerted due to the man’s travel history.

“We have a protocols in place instructing staff on how to act when dealing with suspected cases of a variety of diseases, including ebola.”

Police confirmed that a post-mortem examination revealed he had died suddenly – not as a result of ebola – and that a file had been passed to the coroner.

Tributes have been paid to Mr. Smith with John Kent, the Labour leader of Thurrock Council, saying his loss would “have an impact on many people”.

He added, “Andy was a tremendous and hard-working councillor and was well known among his current constituents in West Thurrock and South Stifford ward.”

Rob Gledhill, leader of the Conservative group in Thurrock, said, “We are sorry to hear of the passing of Councillor Andy Smith and would pass on our condolences to his family.

“Smith had served the residents of Thurrock for over two decades and will no doubt be missed by many. His years of experience and dedication to politics and the community in Thurrock will not be soon forgotten.”

US offers $30m for info on Afghanistan Haqqani leaders

The United States has offered a total $30m in return for information on key leaders of the Haqqani network, blamed for numerous attacks in Afghanistan.
“The Department has authorised rewards of up to $5m each for information leading to the location of Aziz Haqqani, Khalil al-Rahman Haqqani, Yahya Haqqani, and Abdul Rauf Zakir,” the State Department said in a statement on Wednesday.
It also increased its previous reward offer of up to $5m for information on the group’s leader, Sirajuddin Haqqani, to up to $10m.
The State Department added: “The group is allied with al-Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban and cooperates with other terrorist organisations in the region.”
It said that the Pakistan-based Haqqani network was “the most lethal insurgent group” targeting the US-led NATO coalition and Afghan personnel in Afghanistan.

American doctor treated for Ebola discharged from hospital

An American doctor who contracted Ebola treating victims of the deadly virus in Liberia has been released from a U.S. hospital after receiving treatment with an experimental drug, his charity said on Thursday.
Kent Brantly was given ZMapp, a trial drug used on a handful of patients in the West African outbreak, and flown to the United States this month. He was released from Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital, according to a statement from Samaritan’s Purse.

Pakistan assembly rejects opposition demands

Pakistan’s national assembly has rejected the demands of two opposition groups whose supporters have been besieging the parliament for a second day, demanding the prime minister resign over alleged election fraud.
The assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on Thursday in favour of supremacy of constitution, and the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said no unconstitutional act will be accepted at any cost.
The move comes after Pakistani officials held “initial” talks with Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), and Tahir ul-Qadri, head of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT). Protests led by the two men have virtually shut down Pakistan’s capital and raised fears of unrest.
Earlier, cabinet minister Ahsan Iqbal said that the two sides were trying to find a “win-win solution” even as all sides have stuck to their positions.
Thursday’s talks came after Pakistan’s army chief, General Rasheel Sharif, requested that Sharif’s government negotiate with thousands of protesters who have surrounded the parliament.
The twin protests started last week in the eastern city of Lahore and later moved to the capital Islamabad.
The protesters tore down barricades late on Tuesday and entered the so-called “Red Zone” housing key government buildings and diplomatic posts forcing the government to deploy army in the sensitive area.
While the failed talks of senior government officials with Qadri took place inside a shipping container which the authorities had placed to block the demonstrators from marching ahead, the meeting with the representatives of Khan’s party took place in a hotel close to the parliament.

Bomb scare in Abuja over abandoned car

There was a bomb scare in Nyanya, a satellite town in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday, as residents took to their heels on seeing an abandoned Peugeot 406 car which they feared was laden with explosives.

The car, which was parked along the road for a long time, was said to have sparked curiosity and fear around the neighborhood when the owner did not show up.

Residents and traders who feared that the vehicle might have been primed with explosives, were said to have run away from the vicinity.

Soldiers manning a checkpoint around the area who were informed about the suspicious car, however, found nothing incriminating after searching it.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Altine Daniel, said the soldiers had asked the men of the Federal Road Safety Corps to remove the car from the area.

She said, “There was no bomb scare in Nyanya; What happened was that a Peugeot 406 car was parked along the Nyanya-Maraba Road but when the residents saw it, they began to panic and they informed soldiers at a checkpoint in the area.

“The soldiers searched the vehicle and found nothing inside it and so they called the Road Safety officers to come and tow the car away.”

Nigerian who may become first black British PM

Cameron, Chuka

On May 7, 2015, a Nigerian, Chuka Umunna, could make history by becoming the first black Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Born in London in 1978, Chuka was bred in the UK. His late father, Bennett, hailed from Anambra State while his Irish mother, Patricia, is a solicitor.
Co-incidentally, Chuka shares startling similarities with the United States President, Barack Obama, who is the first black President of the world’s most powerful nation.
For instance, Chuka is of mixed race, being the child of a Nigerian father and an Irish mother while Obama is also of mixed race, being the offspring of a white American woman and a Kenyan father. Also Chuka’s father, Bennett, was killed in a mysterious car accident in Nigeria in 1992 while Obama’s father was killed in a car accident in Kenya in 1982.
If history repeats itself as it is being predicted by British political observers, Chuka, who is also a six-foot tall lawyer like Obama, could become the first black Prime Minister in the UK.
Chuka’s life story is perhaps a better guide to his future political direction. It is the story of a rise from the streets of South London (scene of some of Britain’s worse race riots in the 1980s) to the parliament. But it is not the story that some might expect.
His father, Bennett, was a Nigerian labourer, who arrived in Britain in the sixties with one suitcase and no money. Having borrowed the fare from Liverpool to London, he worked in a carwash, became a successful businessman and died in a car crash when his son was 13.
Bennett began an import-export business trading with Nigeria and was starting to make a decent living when he met Patricia Milmo, a solicitor, at a London party. She happened to be the daughter of Sir Helenus Milmo, a Cambridge-educated High Court judge and a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Nazi trials. They later got married, a rare combination during a time of high social inequality and racism.
Chuka believed his father was killed because he refused to indulge in corrupt practices when he was running for the governorship of Anambra State during the administration of former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.).
Bennett died after his car ran into a lorry carrying logs along the Onitsha-Owerri highway in Anambra. Bennett had been splitting his time between London and Nigeria – where he unsuccessfully ran for the governorship of Anambra State and had taken a stand against bribery.
At a point Bennett was also the owner of the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu, the darling of the Igbo people.
When quizzed about his father on Sky News, he had this to say: “There was a lot of speculation in Nigeria at the time around his death. He was a national political figure standing on an anti-corruption ticket and refused to bribe anybody.
“We don’t really talk about it because it is not going to bring him back but I think he would be bowled over that his son is now a politician just like him.”
Chuka, an English and French Law graduate from the University of Manchester, who also holds a Master’s degree from Nottingham Law School, says his interest in politics was shaped by seeing extreme poverty while visiting his father’s relatives in Nigeria and the social divide in his own Streatham constituency in the UK. He says that he is “not super-religious” but that his soft-left values are “rooted in my Christianity.”
The 35-year-old Labour Party Member of Parliament, however, has two hurdles to cross if he is to make history in the UK. This is because in the UK, for one to become the Prime Minister, the person must first be a Member of Parliament, the person’s party must win majority of seats out of the 560 seats in the House of Commons during the parliamentary elections and the person must be the leader of his party.
Presently, Chuka is the Member of Parliament for Streatham, a position he has held since 2010 but must re-contest in 2015 and win to retain the seat.
He is also the Shadow Business Secretary, a position held by a member of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. The duty of the office holder is to scrutinise the actions of the government’s Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and develop alternative policies. The office holder is a member of the Shadow Cabinet.
According to the UK Telegraph, Chuka is rumoured to have the strong support of a former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, who was also a Labour Party leader.
According to the British newspaper, when asked if he was Blair’s anointed candidate, Chuka said, “I really don’t know anything about that.” However, when he was pressed further whether he aspired to head his party, he said, “I don’t entertain any discussion beyond winning the election next year. That would be completely hypocritical of me. To start thinking about hypothetical scenarios would be totally indulgent. All my energy is focused on winning the election, and so should everyone’s. It will be very close.”
Chuka is one of the youngest MPs in the UK having been introduced into British politics by the current Labour Party leader, Ed Miliband, while he was in his 20s.
It was Milband that helped him become an MP and later made him his Parliamentary Private Secretary before he was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet in October 2011. He is tipped to become Miliband’s successor and could become the Prime Minister should the Labour Party win next year’s election.
Chuka, however, claims to hate the comparison of him and Obama which he terms the “construct of lazy journalists.” He sharply divides opinion in British politics. Good-looking, articulate, new-media-savvy and a good orator.
According to FT Magazine, he is not universally popular among his own colleagues, who see more style than substance. “He just has a knack of alienating people,” said one experienced Labour MP. “He is probably the most natural communicator I’ve seen since Tony Blair. The problem is that each week he has fewer supporters than he did at the start of the week.”
Even potential allies recount stories of apparent slights or snubs. A senior party figure says, “Chuka has put people’s backs up. They feel he is inaccessible.” Another long-serving MP adds, “The idea of learning the trade first is only for mere mortals, not for him.” Peter Mandelson, the former Labour business secretary who played a key role in Blair’s rise through to the top, thinks the explanation for this is quite simple, “Envy plays a big part in politics,” he says.
Like Blair, Chuka sometimes connects better with those beyond his own circle. John Cridland, head of the CBI employers’ group, calls him “a guy with whom we can do business.” Andrew Tyrie, Tory Chair of the Commons Treasury Committee, say: “He’s extremely talented and charming.” Andrew Adonis, a former Labour minister, sums up his cross-party appeal: “The best politicians are those who look outwards not inwards.”
However, allies of the current British PM, David Cameron, scoffed at the idea that Chuka might represent a threat to Cameron’s second term bid.
“I can’t think of any issue where he’s put us under pressure,” says one close friend of the prime minister. “He’s pretty average – he’s a slick corporate lawyer.”
Also, among his fellow party members, Chuka’s lack of political definition is another source of irritation as some claim they struggle to work out what he really believes in. But Chuka says people should show a bit more patience. “It would be rather unhealthy if after just three years in parliament I was setting out some blueprint for my country,” he says. “What do people expect?”
But some see him as the potential leader of a mainstream 21st-Century Labour party with the kind of crossover appeal of Blair’s New Labour. Despite initial reservations that Chuka might be a bit too left-wing, Blair has started seeing him regularly. “Chuka strikes Tony as very smart,” says one close ally of the former PM. “Business is a particularly important brief in tough economic times and Chuka seems to be rising to the challenge.”
As if Blair’s blessing was not enough, Chuka recalls the “honour” of spending “a small bit of private time with former US President, Bill Clinton, who he describes as one of his political heroes. “I think he defies the left-right description,” Mandelson says in approbation. “He’s part of a generation that transcends those labels.”
He has also recently been to Europe to meet his friend, the French PM, Manuel Valls.
According to statistics, almost 15 per cent of people in Britain describe themselves as “non-white” but the country has never had a party leader from an ethnic minority background. Nobody has ever come close. Chuka confesses that until his late teens he had not even thought about a career in politics because there was “nobody who looked like me” running the country.
Chuka has been vocal in the call for a reduction in government spending as well as issues on immigration. “They [the French] have something like 40 ministers compared to our 80,” he says.
On the EU itself, he has called for reform, saying not long ago that free movement of workers was not intended to mean free movement of jobseekers. “As one of the most pro-European shadow ministers, I don’t think you can ignore the impact that free movement has had on some of our communities,” he says, adding that it has changed because there are “many more EU members.”
He adds, “There’s a number of things we need to look at. Those who tend to raise the issue of immigration with me are my African and Asian constituents. They want confidence there are proper controls.
“They want to see people integrate, which is why we shouldn’t be spending all this money translating documents and [instead] directing resources to ensure people learn English. And you do need to look at free movement.”
Next year’s election may not be based on ethnicity but it obviously will be hard not to notice that a British-Nigerian could become the leader of one of the world’s wealthiest countries.
On the issue of ethnicity, Chuka has this to say, “A lot of people presume – because of my ethnicity – that I come from a particular social background. I am very quick to disabuse people of any sense that I’ve wanted and struggled in the way that, say, my father did. I come from a fairly middle-class background. People try and pigeonhole you in a box and I find that frustrating sometimes.”
If Chuka is hard to pigeonhole, that may be linked to his own pedigree. It seems likely, if not certain, that Chuka, whose name means God is the greatest, is destined to become a larger presence in his party and thus a bigger potential target despite being a person whose father came to the UK from Nigeria without a dime.
