The Ekiti State House of Assembly on Wednesday approved the creation of 19 additional councils in the state.
This followed the adoption of the report
of the Ad hoc committee set up to work on the bill seeking the creation
of the new councils.
The number increased by one from 18 based
on the results of referendum submitted on Monday by the Ekiti State
Independent Electoral Commission.
Presenting the report, a member of the
Committee representing Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency 11, Ayodeji Odu ,
justified the increase based on the consideration of a petition
submitted by the people Kajola/Oreniwa in Ikole Local Government Area.
He called on the legislature to ensure
that all necessary documents were compiled and forwarded to the National
Assembly for the councils to be listed in the constitution.
The Majority Leader of the House,
Churchill Adedipe, who moved the motion for the approval of the report
and the result of the referendum said people’s participation in the
referendum had shown they were in full support of the exercise.
Adedipe also moved that the councils
should be addressed as Local Council Development Areas pending the final
approval by the National Assembly.
